Safety Considerations

Tree Surgery Safety Chippenham Wiltshire

One of the most important concerns with carrying out tree surgery in Chippenham is the safety aspect, because this can be a dangerous and risky undertaking if conducted incorrectly. Untrained or inexperienced "tree surgeons" in Chippenham are liable to cut corners and just ignore recognised safety guidance, with the result that there might be failure to use cut-proof (chainsaw-proof) apparel (particularly trousers and boots), not cordoning off the work area to safeguard pedestrians and vehicles, no protection from falling, in the shape of ropes, harnesses and platforms, not wearing hearing or eyesight protection, falling branches and timber and an absence of head protection. What can be vulnerable because of these incompetencies are passing and stationary vehicles, garden sheds and fencing, the tree itself, pedestrians, the home owners, those working on the ground, the street facilities, the tree surgeon (person climbing the tree), nearby structures.

Accidents Through Tree Surgery

As has been previously mentioned in this article, the work carried out by tree care professionals in Chippenham can be rather dangerous. Most tree work involves a considerable risk of injury to both operatives and those on the ground, therefore all reasonable precautions must be implemented when carrying out work on trees.

It would seem (according to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE)), that the use of chainsaws, falls from trees, and being struck by a falling tree or branch are the cause of the majority of serious and fatal injuries that are associated with tree work. Surprisingly, arborists and tree care specialists are more at risk of being seriously injured than those involved in building and construction.

The majority of accident claims, in terms of insurance, are for being struck by objects (cranes, grapple hooks, trees, branches, ropes etc), lifting injuries and slipping from ladders.

This will all help you understand why it is so critical to hire a qualified tree surgeon in Chippenham. In the tree care sector, most accidents are down to inexperienced workers trying to tackle tasks that they are not fully trained in, or equipped for. Using an established and trustworthy company that has been operating in the Chippenham area for several years, is the easiest way to avoid such issues, and get your tree care work completed safely.

Crown Thinning Chippenham

Tree Care Chippenham

When you want to ease the stress put on specific branches as a consequence of wind, gravity, ice, or snow, to reduce the total weight of the crown, to prevent the tree from uprooting in blustery conditions, to reduce the tree's wind resistance or to permit more sunlight throughout, a lot of the little live branches that grow on the outer crown of a broad leafed tree are clipped in a procedure which is generally known as crown thinning. The size and shape of the tree aren't changed by this, and the likelihood is it will need to be carried out on a regular schedule, as shoots constantly sprout. A uniform foliage thickness encompassing equally distributed branches ought to be the aim of crown thinning, it shouldn't change the all round size and shape of the tree. The proper machines will also be able to deal with tree stumps tucked away down passageways and alleys. Eco-Plugging Stumps Chippenham

Stump grinding is the traditional technique employed by tree surgeons in Chippenham for removing large stumps. There is however a cheaper solution to this problem these days, which is known as "eco-plugging", and it is growing in popularity. Eco-plugging is not just less costly, but it is also handy for use in hard-to-reach locations which are inaccessible to stump grinding machines.

Eco-plugging is an extremely effective treatment for killing off tree stumps and does not affect any nearby vegetation and trees. Eco-plugs can be used in all weather conditions and at any time of the year, and they eliminate a tree stump by killing off the whole root system. Containing a kind of granular glyphosate herbicide, eco-plugs are 95-100 percent effective, and is suitable for a wide array of trees.

Tree Transplanting Chippenham

Tree Transplanting Chippenham (01249)

Removing mature trees and transplanting them in another location may seem tricky, however with heavy lifting equipment and tractor mounted spades, it has become a comparatively straightforward task. Removing a tree from your land does not have to involve chopping it down and excavating the roots; a professional tree removal company in Chippenham can remove and transplant even fully developed trees and restore the disturbed ground afterwards.

If you've got no choice but to move a tree in Chippenham in the warmer seasons of spring and summer, you should minimise the stress of the move on the root-ball by comprehensively soaking the soil with water before any work commences. Excavating a mature tree will involve a mechanical spade burrowing down and encircling the tree's root ball, before raising the whole tree, unscathed, from the ground. The tree is then able to be transferred to its new home for re-planting, or left in temporary storage until it's ready to be replanted.

An accredited tree moving business in Chippenham will liaise with local authorities to make certain that preservation orders and local regulations are complied with at all stages of the tree moving and transplantation procedure. It should be possible to find transplanting specialists in Allington, Biddestone, Lacock, Sheldon, Chequers, Rowden Hill, Frogwell, Langley Burrell, Middle Lodge, Hardenhuish, and in Chippenham.

Preventing Storm Damage

Of all the living things in our gardens, trees give the impression of being the strongest, sturdiest and the most able to stand up to the vicissitudes of Mother Nature. Some tree species can thrive and survive without any issues for hundreds (even thousands) of years, in particular oaks, yews and sweet chestnuts.

Despite all this, trees can be vulnerable to adverse weather conditions, and in addition to the possibility of falling tree limbs and branches, when faced with a certain set of conditions they may also topple over completely, causing lots of damage. The primary weather related problem for trees is wind, and as the frequency of severe weather events and storms in Chippenham increases due to climate change, this kind of damage has become more and more commonplace. Another issue can be heavy winter snow, and saturated soil during extended periods of rain or flooding.

To trim and remove any dead or overhanging branches that might cause a problem in times of severe weather, it's a good idea to get a certified Chippenham tree surgeon to check out your trees regularly.

Taller trees can also be fitted with lightning rods, copper conductors, or other lightning protection systems, to lower the risk of them being struck by lightning and to prevent nearby buildings and property being affected by jumps or "arcs" from one conductive path to another. A tree which is struck by lightning can be severely weakened or even killed, a weakened tree can be left vulnerable to pests, decay or disease. For any of you who think that lightning is not all that common, there are approximately three hundred thousand lightning strikes in the United Kingdom annually.

Your local Chippenham tree surgery firm will be able to offer advice and guidance on what can be done to protect your trees from being damaged by storms, and reduce the risk of mishaps taking place as a result of this.

Hedge Trimming Chippenham

Hedge Trimming Chippenham

Although the maintenance and care of trees and shrubs is the primary focus of Chippenham tree surgeons, they're often called upon to look after hedges, such as height reduction and routine trimming. This is particularly important for conifer hedges such as Leylandii which can quickly get too tall for a regular gardener to deal with.

When a hedge is neglected and poorly maintained, it can become overgrown and out of control fairly quickly. If you don't want to hedge to take over large parts of your garden in Chippenham, routine clipping makes sense, and this is imperative not simply for cosmetic reasons, but because it also makes the hedge stronger.

If you have intentions to sell your property, tidy hedges will help to make your entire garden neater, and might even add to the value of your home in Chippenham. You should also be able to obtain hedge trimming in Allington, Biddestone, Lacock, Sheldon, Chequers, Rowden Hill, Frogwell, Langley Burrell, Middle Lodge, Hardenhuish, and Chippenham itself.

Leylandii Hedge Removal

Many residents in Chippenham prefer Leylandii hedges for their rapid growth and privacy benefits. Nevertheless, they have the potential to outgrow their bounds and become laborious to upkeep. Before removing a Leylandii hedge, it is crucial to think about a few critical factors. The first essential point is to verify that there are no legal protections in place for the hedge, such as a Tree Preservation Order. When the hedge is under legal protection, you must seek the local council's authorisation before you can remove it. In addition, Leylandii hedges can possess deep-rooted systems, underscoring the importance of engaging a competent tree surgeon to remove both the hedge and its roots safely. Finally, it's crucial to dispose of the hedge waste in a responsible and eco-friendly way after its removal. To conclude, the removal of a Leylandii hedge can be a hazardous and laborious task, requiring the observance of necessary safety measures and the potential solicitation of professional intervention.

Removal of Tree Stumps Chippenham

If you are in a position where you need to have a substantial tree cut down and removed from your property in Chippenham, you are likely to be left with a stump, which will also have to be dealt with. You might be thinking about using the tree stump as a garden seat for instance, and might be happy to leave it in position until it eventually rots away. However, tree stumps in your garden can send out new suckers in an effort to regrow, and sizeable tree stumps can take quite a few years to break down, during which time they can become an eyesore, a dangerous trip hazard and the perfect hiding place for undesirable pests, bacteria and fungi.

There are various techniques for getting rid of a stump entirely, but stump grinding or stump removal are the 2 key options. In the following paragraphs we'll be focusing on the removal alternative as opposed to grinding.

In regards to removing a tree stump, the 3 main methods are digging out by hand, burning and chemical treatments. If your intention is to undertake the stump removal by yourself, any of these methods could be an option. Professional tree surgeons will normally suggest the aforementioned stump grinding method, however might offer the alternative of a chemical treatment like eco-plugging.

Chemical Stump Removal: A powerful chemical substance such as Resolva Xtra Tough Tree Stump Killer, Vitax SBK Stump Killer or Roundup Tree Stump Remover, will be required if you choose to go with the chemical treatment option. It is essential that you follow the directions to the letter when using any of these chemicals, because they can be extremely dangerous and toxic. This is a long term stump removal solution, because it could take quite a few weeks to rot away, subject to the size of the stump. It will still need to be removed with a spade and an axe once it has rotted away completely.

Stump Burning Techniques: Burning is not generally recommended, and may contravene legislation in your area, so take great care if choosing this option. It involves drilling some 1" holes in the stump and continually filling and topping up the holes with vegetable oil over a period of several days. You should then cover the tree stump with logs or charcoal and set fire to it. Somebody will have to constantly supervise this until it's safely burnt out. When the fire has burnt out, you need to ensure that it is extinguished and cool, after which you will be able to manually dig out the stump ashes and roots.

An alternative option is scooping out all the soil from below the tree stump and setting a fire in the cavity underneath. If the tree stump is close to fences, buildings or other trees, you shouldn't ever use any of these stump burning methods.

Digging Out a Stump by Hand: Digging up a tree stump by hand calls for an assortment of tools such as a handsaw, a pointed spade, a chainsaw and loppers. It entails digging down to expose the roots, chopping the roots with loppers or a saw, and finally releasing the stump, to make it easier to get out. For the final freeing up process you may need to make use of a cable ratchet winch. This has a tendency to be tedious and tiring work, and should never be attempted by anyone who is not fit and healthy.

Air-Spading Chippenham

When you're concerned about the health of a tree, it might be due to various problems, but issues with the root system is a common trigger for such worries. Easy accessibility to your tree's roots is essential for a certified Chippenham tree surgeon to check for root rot, soil compaction and other plausible issues.

This was sometimes a difficult thing to achieve previously, because in the process of digging down, the roots of the tree could be easily damaged. Many modern day tree surgeons in Chippenham use a system called "air spading", which uses compressed air to effectively break down and remove compacted soil without any risk of damaging the tree's roots.

The general health of a tree can be affected in a negative way when the soil surrounding the roots becomes compacted by construction work, passing vehicles or foot traffic. When a tree is "stressed" it can become more prone to attack by diseases, insects and pests, and this stress can be caused by a lack of water and nutrients. There can also be problems with root flare, when the flare around the base of the trunk becomes covered in an excess of soil, causing the tissue to break down, and heightening the chance of root decay. Air-spading is a helpful technique for resolving this.

The air spading process involves the use of an air compressor and an air-spade tool which blows air into the soil at speeds of up to 1200mph, the air penetrates the spaces in the soil and quickly breaks it up, whilst leaving tree roots and nearby utilities untouched. The bulk of the soil is forced away from the tree's roots by the highly powerful flow of air, meaning the investigation can take place immediately. A resolution can then be found for any any obvious problems, and the previously compact soil replaced with a looser layer of wood mulch and fertiliser to help rejuvenate the tree. Tree Surveys Chippenham

There are a number of reasons why you may require a tree survey, and the most common is for development or property extension. If, for example, you're clearing a piece of land in Chippenham to make room for an extension to an existing property or a brand new home, and there are trees growing on that land, you might need to carry out a tree survey to British Standards BS5837. Tree surveys in Chippenham must be handled by a qualified arboricultural surveyor or tree surgeon, and this is the case whether the tree survey is being carried out on either a private or public property.

A broad range of information about all the trees within a defined area will be gleaned by a properly conducted tree survey. For example:

  • The diameter of each tree (measured 1.5m above the ground).
  • The expected lifespan of the trees.
  • The structural and physiological health of the trees.
  • The existence of any Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs).
  • The species of trees (either scientific or common).
  • The ages of the trees.
  • The branch spread towards the North, East, South and West.
  • The height of each tree.
  • A tree reference number for each of the trees.
  • Preliminary tree management guidelines.
  • The number of trees.

You probably won't need to do a tree survey if you're doing work on an existing home or property in Chippenham but you're not changing the building's footprint and are not modifying the service lines or access points.

Vegetation Management

Vegetation Control

It is not just the removal and maintenance of trees that your nearby Chippenham tree surgeon will be prepared to assist you with, but also any form of proliferating vegetation which is jungling up your land. Usually tree care experts will be more than happy to get rid off shrubs, overgrown vegetation, weeds and bushes that might be taking hold around pathways, buildings, drives, garages or sheds, and creating an issue. If you are going to maintain your garden correctly then all this excessive growth has to be reduced frequently, and if you've got the time and inclination then this is undoubtedly a task you could accomplish by yourself if you are fit and well, or you can get your local tree surgeon to call every few months to keep it under control. The control of vegetation is a must if you're going to keep safe and easy entry to all parts of your garden and if this is not done the vegetation can very quickly take over and take a lot of the enjoyment out of your garden. Besides anything else the garden will look better when maintained properly.

Cable Bracing Chippenham

Tree cable bracing is a procedure which is used to support a tree when it shows signs of decay, damage, or presents a risk to nearby property (or persons). When older or valuable trees in Chippenham are involved, cable bracing is used where it is undesirable to chop down a tree or cut out large portions that are unsafe.

Fitting a cable bracing system may be possible to support the V-shaped forks, weak limbs and poor joints of a tree. To help alleviate structural stresses and prolong the lifespan of old and valuable trees most tree surgeons in Chippenham should be able to undertake different kinds of bracing work by the fitting of rods and cables.

Cable bracing has the objective of offering a flexible and shock-absorbing method of support that is non-invasive and does not cause further damage to the tree by having to drill and bolt the branches. To ensure the safety of the tree and surrounding areas, a comprehensive risk assessment needs to be done before any actual work can begin. Save The Planet And Plant A Tree

If we look at yearly figures, roughly three and six billion trees are being felled all over the world. There is so much that is created from trees and this means there is a huge requirement in the marketplace. Such as lumber to build homes, paper for writing on and even toilet paper for, well you know. Alas, we need the things that the trees produce but we can do something about the depletion of our forests.

Trees are celebrated on Arbor Day and the aim of the celebration is that we should plant trees at that time but this is not truly dealing with the issue. This is because nearly all folks don't go out and plant a tree. If they did, we would be all set.

Are you aware that there are approximately 7 billion people right now? That is just an estimate as you can't keep an exact count. The number of trees worldwide would be restored if every individual planted a tree on Arbor Day. We are aware that this is unlikely to take place.

Plant a Tree

If you would like to save our environment, planting trees is a good step that you can take. As for planting a tree, I would not propose you just do this on a specific day every year. How about going out and planting trees on a weekly basis or at least every month? The reason is because someone must make up for all those individuals who are utilizing our resources but don't want to plant a tree for whatever reason.

Each year on Arbor Day, the number of trees that are planted is only between 8 and 15 million. Hence on an annual basis, we have a shortage of roughly 5 billion trees. This situation continues to deteriorate.

Whereas we all must make the effort to plant trees, I have an idea that may solve this once and for all. It could be made a legal requirement that anyone involved in the felling of trees should replace every one cut down with two newly planted ones and this would go a long way to resolving the problem.

We are going to have to continue to deal with this problem ourselves until there is the political willpower to make these changes. And it won't take that much for us to increase the tree population each year. If each month, roughly 10% of people on the planet could plant a tree, that would make up for the numbers being felled yearly. On average, that would be around 7 billion trees being planted annually. And that 1 billion extra trees are exactly what we need in order to get our tree population back to where it must be.

So for anyone who desires to make a positive difference to our planet, go plant a tree. Bear in mind that we only need 10% of the world's population to make a commitment to this. You're the only one who can decide if you want to step up and help.
