If you need to alleviate the stress upon specific limbs caused by wind, gravity, ice, or snow, to allow more light inside, to lower the weight of the crown of the tree, to reduce the wind resistance of the tree or to prevent the tree being uprooted in strong winds, many of the little branches that are growing on the outer crown of a broad leafed tree are pruned in a procedure which is termed crown thinning. The shape and size aren't altered by this process, and the chances are that it will need to be carried out on a fairly regular schedule, as shoots constantly develop. Dead-wooding is a fundamental element of tree management, and all professional Stoney Stanton tree surgeons will undertake this procedure where necessary. Where there could be a danger to property, vehicles or pedestrians, dead-wooding is done to remove the dying and dead branches that are at risk of falling to the ground. There can be a number of reasons behind why the branches of a tree die off, the most widespread being excessive shading, attack by pests, diseases or a damaged root system.

Whilst safety is of course the most frequent reason for dead-wooding a tree, it's quite often necessary to make the tree more appealing, or so that the tree itself will benefit from the process. It is possible to radically improve the health of a tree by removing damaged, dying and dead branches, an excessive amount of which will attract the spread of disease and insect infestation. Trees with a lot of dead wood also look ugly, therefore to improve its appearance, this should all be removed.

Only larger dead branches will usually be removed, as in most instances the smaller ones won't present much of a risk. Then again, it may be essential to cut out any dead branches that are in excess of 50 millimetres in diameter, where trees in Stoney Stanton overhang a garden, a park, a road, a public space or a property.

Firewood & Logs Stoney Stanton

Firewood Logs Stoney Stanton

If you're wanting to buy logs or firewood in Stoney Stanton, tree surgeons are usually a great source for this particular commodity. As felling trees and chopping off branches is part of their daily schedule, this is an obvious offshoot for the enterprising tree surgeon.

Recently felled branches and logs are frequently available "free to collector" from certain Stoney Stanton tree surgeons, who are just pleased to get shot of them. Other local tree surgeons, who've got the space to store them, will season and dry the logs and sell them off by the bag or lorry load, and will sometimes deliver them to your home.

Chucking "wet" logs on your wood burner or open fire isn't a great idea, and will produce a lot of smoke and block up your flue. You should only use logs that have been left to dry for a minimum of a year and have a moisture content of twenty percent or lower. The advantage of getting logs from tree surgeons, is that these are likely to be mostly assorted hardwood logs, which will last and throw out heat for three or four hours, giving a long, sustained burn. If you are also able to pick up a few softwood logs, these are superb for getting a fire started, and upon which you can throw your dry hardwood logs once your fire is blazing. Tree Pollarding Stoney Stanton

Tree Pollarding Stoney Stanton

When a tree has noticeably got too large for its current surroundings, it needs to be greatly reduced in size through a technique known as "pollarding". This tactic is also sometimes employed for aesthetic reasons to change a tree into an especially pleasing shape or form. You'll regularly witness trees which have been pollarded growing alongside roads in Stoney Stanton, and also fairly typically in managed hedgerows The somewhat bare and harsh appearance that results from pollarding isn't at all popular with those who appreciate trees, given that it's so different from its attractive natural state. The advantageous side of the pollarding process, is that trees which may otherwise have to be cut down can be saved. Pollarding is routinely used on broad-leafed species like maples, planes, limes, beeches, oaks, horse chestnuts and sycamores. Preventing Storm Damage

Although we're all familiar with the extreme power of Mother Nature, big trees seem strong, sturdy and capable of withstanding virtually any eventuality. The lifespan of most tree species far surpasses that of us humans, and in actual fact some types such as yews, sweet chestnuts and oaks can live and continue to grow for hundreds (even thousands) of years.

Nonetheless, when faced with a certain set of conditions they can be extremely susceptible to the elements, and it's not simply falling branches or tree limbs that can be the result, but the entire tree can fall down in extreme circumstances. High winds and gales are a major issue for trees, and this type of damage has become more commonplace in Stoney Stanton, as the number of severe weather events and storms escalates with climate change. Soil that becomes saturated during floods or prolonged periods of rainfall can be another problem, as can heavy snow in winter.

To prune and remove any dead, dying or overhanging branches that could cause an issue in severe weather conditions, it's advisable to get a competent Stoney Stanton tree surgeon to examine your trees regularly.

It's also important to fit larger trees with copper conductors, lightning rods, or other lightning protection systems, to prevent them being struck by lightning, and to safeguard nearby buildings and property which might be susceptible to side-flashes ("arcs"). A tree can be killed or seriously weakened by a lightning strike, and even where the effect is not immediately recognisable, the tree will likely be more vulnerable to attacks by disease and pests. Lightning occurs more frequently than you may think, and there are something like three hundred thousand lightning strikes annually in the UK alone.

If you're concerned about the risk of your trees in Stoney Stanton being damaged by storms, you should ask what your local tree care specialist can do to safeguard them, and lower the risk of mishaps taking place. Protecting Trees in Winter

Whilst you might not believe that the weather in the UK is severe enough to warrant protecting your shrubs and trees, it may be a good idea to take a second look at this. The winter months can actually be a tough time for trees, plants and shrubs and even the ones that we think of as hardy can benefit from some extra protection during times of intense cold.

Although many of your trees may have already shed their leaves come winter in Stoney Stanton, it is storms and high winds that are the biggest concern, and despite the fact that they offer less wind resistance, they could still be damaged. If the weather conditions in Stoney Stanton have been windy, and a tree on your property looks to be weakened or in danger of toppling over, it's advisable to call in a tree surgeon to assess whether any action is needed. Heavy snowfall can also lead to snapped branches, so keep your eyes open when this type of weather arrives. A deep layer of mulch around the base of shrubs and trees (especially recently planted ones), will help to keep the roots frost-free and prevent them from becoming dehydrated.

Tree Surveys Stoney Stanton

There are a number of instances when tree surveys may be needed, land development and property extension being the most frequent. As outlined by British Standards BS5837, if you are clearing a piece of land to prepare for the building of a new house or an extension to an existing property in Stoney Stanton, and there are trees on that land, you may need to conduct a professional tree survey. Tree surveys on both private and public property in Stoney Stanton, should be conducted by a qualified arborist or tree surgeon.

A wide range of information about all of the trees within a defined area will be gleaned by a properly conducted tree survey. For instance:

  • A unique tree reference number for each tree.
  • Recommendations for tree management.
  • The structural and physiological health of the trees.
  • The ages of the trees (i.e. young, semi-mature, mature, over-mature and veteran).
  • The number of trees (those of more than 75mm diameter 1.5m from ground level).
  • The existence of any TPOs.
  • The spread of branches to the South, North, West and East.
  • The height of each tree in metres.
  • The species of each tree.
  • The expected lifespan of the trees.
  • The diameter of each tree (taken 1.5m above the ground).

If you're altering an existing home in Stoney Stanton but you are not increasing the footprint of the property and aren't changing the service lines or access points, a tree survey will most likely not be needed.

Chainsaws

Chainsaws

With regards to the equipment that is utilised by experienced tree surgeons in Stoney Stanton, the chainsaw is the most commonly seen. The preferred style of chainsaw with professional users is the petrol powered version, being easy to handle and more mobile, although you are able to purchase mains operated chainsaws and rechargeable battery models. For cutting through large trunks and limbs, petrol chainsaws are really the only option, being powerful, robust and able to cope with even the most substantial of tree work.

A chainsaw comprises an engine and a revolving chain with a row of teeth which cut through the bark and wood of a tree. There are also a variety of styles of chainsaw, pole saws for long distance pruning and hard to reach branches, top-handled for working at height (and which can be used single handedly) and rear-handled for work at ground level (must be used with two hands).

Whilst it is not the safest thing to be climbing up a tree with, it's fairly rare to find a professional Stoney Stanton tree surgeon who does not use a chainsaw just about every day. To be able to become a member of the Arboricultural Association, being trained in the safe use and maintenance of chainsaws is one of the key requirements for tree surgeons.

The most popular makers of chainsaw used in the United Kingdom by tree surgery specialists are Hyundai, Makita, Stihl and Husqvarna, although of course there are several different makes and models.

Air-Spading Stoney Stanton

There are numerous issues that could make the health of your trees a concern, however problems with a tree's root system are frequently the cause. An experienced Stoney Stanton tree surgeon might need to get at the root system of your tree, in order to check for problems such as soil compaction and root rot.

Because there's a high probability of damaging the roots during the process of digging, previously this was a tricky thing to achieve. To effectively break up and remove compressed soil without damaging tree roots or underground utilities, a contemporary system that's frequently used is "air spading".

The soil around tree roots can get compacted by construction work, foot traffic or passing vehicles, and this can have a negative impact on the health of a tree. When a tree becomes "stressed" it is more susceptible to attack by insects, disease and pests, and this stress can be caused by a lack of nutrients and water. Air spading is also a good technique for resolving root flare problems, where the flare at the base of the stem becomes covered with too much soil, causing tissue breakdown, and heightening the possibility of root decay.

Involving the use of an air-spading tool and an air compressor, this process blows high-speed air into the soil, this breaks it down by entering any voids in the soil, but has no effect on the tree roots or utilities. The bulk of the soil is forced away from the roots by the powerful flow of air, permitting immediate investigation. A resolution can then be found for any issues, and the soil replaced with a looser layer of chip mulch and fertiliser to help encourage the tree to rejuvenate.

Vegetation Control

Vegetation Management

While many homeowners in Stoney Stanton will assume that tree surgeons only address the care and removal of trees, that's really not the case, as the vast majority of tree surgeons are also willing to manage overgrown gardens and land that is choked with out-of-control plant growth. Usually tree care experts will be prepared to remove overgrown vegetation, weeds, shrubs and bushes which might be taking hold near pathways, buildings, driveways, sheds or patios, and generally causing an annoyance. If you're going to maintain your garden effectively then all this excess growth has to be reduced every few months, and if you have the time and inclination then this is a task you might tackle on your own if you're fit and able enough, or you can book in a tree surgeon to pay a visit now and again to keep it in check. The control of vegetation is essential if you are to keep easy and safe entry to all parts of your property and if this is ignored the plants and vegetation can pretty quickly take over and lessen the enjoyment of your garden. Apart from anything else your garden will look better when maintained properly.

Tree Removal Stoney Stanton

Tree Removal Stoney Stanton

Despite the fact that there could be a variety of reasons why you might want to remove a tree from your property or garden in Stoney Stanton, tree removal should in fact be a last resort. Numerous trees could even be protected by law, so you're unable to take them out even if you wanted to, except when they're presenting a safety threat. Authentic triggers for tree removal might be when your tree presents a hazard to safety, the tree roots are endangering retaining walls/foundations, your tree is in the way of new construction, you have a dead/dying tree, the tree is damaged, your tree is infected/diseased or your tree has grown too large. Conservation Areas & Tree Preservation Orders Stoney Stanton

Another thing to consider before beginning serious work on your trees, is whether or not they've got a TPO (Tree Preservation Order) on them. You local authority is the place to go to determine whether there are TPOs on any of your property's trees. If one of your trees have TPOs, you cannot perform lopping, topping, wilful destruction, wilful damage, removal, cutting down or uprooting, without consent in writing from your local authority. Your tree surgeon should be able to explain the process and help you with any checks.

If you currently reside inside a conservation area in Stoney Stanton, you should always consult with your council concerning any tree surgery work that you want to undertake, and if the tree concerned has a diameter of more than 75mm (at a point 1.5m from the ground), you must give your local authority a minimum of six weeks written notice.

Emergency Tree Services Stoney Stanton

Whilst emergencies are infrequent concerning trees in your garden, accidents can happen, therefore it might be wise to have an emergency telephone number where you can reach a tree surgeon in Stoney Stanton. When the conditions are windy and stormy in Stoney Stanton, local tree surgeons generally expect to see a huge increase in emergency calls, and as luck would have it most of them provide a 24/7 service for this very reason. The chances of injury or damage is increased during blustery weather, with branches breaking off and falling to the ground, and sometimes even whole trees collapsing. Plummeting branches and tree limbs can cause squashed sheds, smashed greenhouses, damaged fences and busted garden furniture, so instead of having to deal with the aftermath of such occurrences, prevention is the key.

When substantial limbs snap of and crash onto streets, railway lines and public footpaths, the local authorities in the Stoney Stanton area will also sometimes need emergency tree care services.

Even after the emergency tree surgery has been accomplished, a tree which has lost some large branches might need to be "re-balanced", and this may be carried out for purely aesthetic reasons or because the tree now appears lopsided, with more weight on one side than the other, quite possibly resulting in further problems. If you have any of these tree related problems, you shouldn't attempt to sort any of them out yourself, and you must promptly call up a local tree surgeon in Stoney Stanton who provides emergency services, so that they can suggest the best strategy. Tree Transplanting Stoney Stanton

Tree Transplanting Stoney Stanton (01455)

Moving mature trees is a delicate, yet rather simple process, due mostly to modern tractor mounted spades, tree lifting devices and other specialist tools. Fully developed trees can be transplanted onto new ground to accomplish an instantly landscaped look, or out-of-control wooded areas can be thinned out without needing to stoop to tree felling.

Moving trees in Stoney Stanton can be completed in any season of the year, but during the warmer summer months the soaking of the surrounding soil becomes particularly crucial so as to cause as little stress as possible on the root-ball. To raise a tree from the earth a truck mounted mechanical tree spade is forced down into the ground to encapsulate the main root ball, before lifting the whole tree free. If the tree is not to be straight away replanted, it can be stored temporarily as long as its root ball and surrounding soil is kept damp.

If you wish to move a tree from ground that has a preservation order on it, a certified tree moving business in Stoney Stanton can liaise with appropriate agencies to approve replanting in a suitable area. You should be able to get tree transplanting specialists in Croft, Sharnford, Sapcote, Potters Marston, Frolesworth, Primethorpe, Sutton in the Elms, Aston Flamville, Elmesthorpe, Huncote, and Stoney Stanton itself. Removing Tree Stumps Stoney Stanton

If you are in a position where you need to have a large tree cut down and removed from your garden in Stoney Stanton, you're possibly going to be stuck with a stump, which will also have to be tackled. In certain circumstances it may be acceptable for you to simply leave the tree stump where it is until it decays and rots away on it's own. However, a big stump could take several years to rot down, and might even produce suckers in an attempt to regrow itself. Tree stumps can also be a trip hazard, an eysore and can attract unwelcome pests.

Stump grinding or stump removal are the 2 primary choices, if you do opt to remove the tree stump completely. For the purposes of this section we'll be looking at removal as opposed to grinding.

Digging out by hand, burning or chemical treatments, are the three main methods of removing a tree stump. If your intention is to do the tree stump removal by yourself, any of these methods could be an option. Professional tree surgeons will normally go with the aforementioned stump grinding method, but may suggest a chemical stump removal treatment like eco-plugging.

Chemical Stump Killers: If you decide on the chemical stump removal solution, this will involve the use of Vitax SBK Stump Killer, Roundup Tree Stump Remover or Resolva Xtra Tough Tree Stump Killer. You must always read and closely follow the directions for quantities, timings and applications for these chemical solutions, and be aware that they're toxic and oftentimes inflammable. This is not a short term resolution, and it can take a few weeks for the stump to rot down totally, after which time a spade and an axe can be used to remove it.

Tree Stump Removal by Burning: Be careful if you use this approach to stump removal, since it can be dangerous and may be at variance with local legislation. The burning process involves drilling a number of one inch holes into the stump, filling keeping them topped up with vegetable oil for a number of days until soaked. The tree stump is then heaped up with charcoal or logs and set alight. However, this should be monitored continually and never left to its own devices. Once fully burned, make certain the fire is completely extinguished, leave it to cool and then proceed to dig out the roots and remnants of stump.

Other solutions include digging out and clearing all the soil from underneath the stump, and lighting a fire in the void that has been established. None of these stump burning methods should even be contemplated if the tree stump is close to buildings, fences or other trees.

Hand Stump Digging: Digging out a tree stump by hand calls for an assortment of tools such as a handsaw, a chainsaw, a pointed spade and loppers. It involves digging down to uncover the roots, cutting the roots with loppers or saws, and ultimately releasing the stump, or making it easier to get out. For the final lifting out process you may find that you need to make use of a winch. This is laborious and tiring work.

Tree Surgery Accidents

The work undertaken by tree care professionals in Stoney Stanton can be really hazardous. Most tree work involves a risk of injury to both operatives and those on the ground, therefore all possible safety measures must be taken when working on trees.

It would appear (according to the HSE (Health & Safety Executive)), that the use of chainsaws, falls from trees, and being struck by a falling branch or tree are responsible for the vast majority of fatal and serious injuries that are associated with tree work. In fact, people involved in tree care work are more at risk of being seriously injured than those who are working in the construction industry.

The majority of accident claims, in relation to insurance, are for lifting injuries, being struck by objects (cranes, ropes, grapple hooks, trees, branches etc) and slipping from ladders.

This will all help you understand why it's so crucial to employ a certified tree surgeon in Stoney Stanton. Most often, accidents that occur in the tree care industry are due to unqualified novices attempting work that they're not equipped for, or sufficiently skilled in. Therefore, to avoid this sort of problem, always use a trustworthy and experienced Stoney Stanton company that has been trading in the area for a good few years.

Save Our Environment By Planting Trees

Because of cutting down trees, we lose as many as six billion trees yearly. The fact is that the products that are created from trees are required for our everyday living. Such as timber to construct houses, paper for writing on and even toilet paper for, well you know. We all have to take responsibility in maintaining our woodlands even if there are items we have to use that are made from trees.

Despite the fact that we have Arbor Day, and we all should plant a tree every Arbor Day, that is merely taking care of a small part of the problem. Planting trees is not an activity that many people give any thought to. If people could plant a tree, it would make a huge impact.

There are around seven billion people in the world now. However, you can never be sure of the precise figures for this. The number of trees globally would be restored if every person used Arbor Day as a reason to plant a tree. Unfortunately, this won't ever take place.

Plant a Tree

Therefore, planting trees is something you must consider if you are worried about the air we breathe and the Earth. And I don't mean to just go out once a year and plant a tree. I am suggesting planting a tree approximately once a month or even once a week. It is just a fact that many people will never give any thought to conservation or planting trees, so we have to make up for this ourselves.

Numbers show that only about 15 million trees are planted on Arbor Day. That still results to a 5 billion tree shortfall every year. And yearly, it simply keeps getting worse.

A complete answer is called for that still encourages folks to plant trees but I would like to suggest the following. What could truly solve this problem is if every wood business or tree farmer, by law, had to plant two saplings for every tree they take, so our tree issue wouldn't be an issue anymore.

But until somebody can turn this into reality, we are left to take care of replacing the trees ourselves. And it won't take that much for us to increase the tree population every year. For one, if merely 10% of the people in the world planted a tree each month, it would cover the amount of trees that are chopped down each year. On average, that would be approximately 7 billion trees being planted annually. And that 1 billion surplus of trees are exactly what we need to get our tree population back to where it has to be.

Every person worried about the health of our ecosystems can do his part by planting trees. Bear in mind that we only need 10% of the people worldwide to make a commitment to this. It's your decision if you want to help out.
